Hi, I’m Priya. Welcome to my Substack called ‘How Round is Your Roti?’
Why this name?
Well, as a child, I used to see the women in the kitchen making the best round rotis (aka chappatis or rotli). There is a skill to making them, and I used to think, ‘If I could do that, then I’ve made it as a South Asian woman’.
But the reality is we are so much more than roti-making machines, and thinking about being perfect in cooking is another aspect of our lives that we are judged on.
We are capable of so much more, yet the narrative about South Asian women can still be about whether they can cook, how they look, and whether they are good mothers, daughters, or daughters-in-law.
We are judged around these things, which I think can prevent us from living truly how we wish to. Perhaps that means sacrificing our ambitions, not investing in ourselves because we’ve been told always to put others first, or even finding it hard to take up space, share our opinions, or advocate for ourselves, whether that’s at work or at home.
I want this substack to delve into issues that are stopping South Asian women from doing what they want to.
It’s time to start breaking cycles and changing our mindsets to give women recognition and inspiration to do what brings them joy and purpose.

About me
I’ve chosen to start this Substack because of my own life experiences:
From growing up in the UK and trying to bridge two cultures together and find my place (still working on it!).
From being the eldest of four daughters and feeling the anger and injustice in the way daughters are treated when compared to sons and the expectation that are drummed into us.
After spending a decade in the banking industry and seeing both internal and external barriers limiting my progression.
I’m tired of living by other people’s expectations of me and what I ‘should’ be doing. I’m now in my 40’s and now I want to be the person that cheers women on, helping them to go where we are needed and break cycles that have kept us in the background for too long. I want to play a part helping women's issues be seen so that women now and our future generations thrive.
My day job is a career coach and this substack is my passion coming to life.
