Welcome to the final week of the Career Clarity Challenge!

If you completed the activities from the previous weeks, well done!! This type of self-reflection and awareness will serve you well, and I hope it has given you a boost of confidence and clarity about what you want from your career.

This is a quick reminder that my coaching offer expires on March 18th. If you want to work on your career goals and improve your confidence and clarity this year, please book or contact me for a free clarity call.

Once you’ve done the reflection work, I invite you today to set some goals for the year and start taking action towards them. Not many people consciously sit and plan for their careers, but this will help you focus and gain traction.

However, I know many people struggle with this area. We may set goals and find that we only focus on them for a few weeks, or they may get lost in the busyness of the coming weeks and months, never to be looked at again. So, I’m going to share my coaching tips for setting achievable goals and actions through the exercises below and a video with my seven best goal-setting tips.

Challenge 4: Goal Setting and Taking Action

If we go back to week two, Starting with the End in Mind, you should have created a long-term vision of where you want to be in your career in the next 5-10 years. This is the starting point for any goal: think long-term, connect with why it’s important to you, and work backward.

For this first exercise, I want you to think of all the stepping stones you need to get to the long-term vision by completing the sentences below:

Exercise 1

In 5 years, I want to be ….

In 3 years, I want to be….

In 12 months, I want to be….

We are breaking that long-term vision down into smaller stepping stones.

Coaching is about assessing the gap between where you are now and where you want to be, creating goals, and taking action to help you achieve them.

Now you know where you want to be in 12 months, which is much closer to focus on!

Exercise 2:

Brainstorm all the areas you need to work on to achieve your 12-month goal.

For example:

  • Learning a new skill.

  • Expanding your network.

  • Look for new roles or opportunities.

  • Work on your personal brand

This is your list to work on this year, but it could be too long or too vague at this stage. This is where many people often get overwhelmed and give up, which is why the next step is crucial.

Exercise 3:

Choose just ONE area to work on for the next few months and ask yourself;

On a scale of 1 -10 (1=nowhere near and 10=ideal situation ), what number would you place yourself at right now? (You also need to know what the ideal 10/10 looks like.)

Perhaps you’ve researched a course or joined a networking group already but haven’t got much further, so you may be at a 3 or 4.

Now ask yourself: ‘What do I need to do in the next few weeks that will move me ONE step closer?’

For example, ‘I will make a shortlist of five courses and choose one to sign up to by 31 March 2025.’

This sentence may seem straightforward, but a few things make it MORE achievable.

  • Use present tense and confident language. ‘I will’ or ‘I am’ vs I might/should/could…

  • Write it down and put it somewhere you see it regularly. Post-it notes are great.

  • Use a deadline; it focuses the mind and gives you a date to work towards.

  • It’s specific and measurable. You may have heard of SMART goals; if you use the framework, it will help you keep your goals in check. (I’ve added a worksheet on SMART goal setting at the end for paid subscribers.)

Keep using this framework for every goal you set. It can work for any area of your life.

In coaching, we break things down into manageable, small goals that align with your bigger picture.

There may be many steps to take to achieve your goals, but stay focused on one area at a time and make steady progress.
